Definitely, I am using Open Source, Proton BASIC, Crownhill Associates.
But, the manufacturer of C64 doesn’t need license to use commercial terms or name Open Source, Proton BASIC, Crownhill Associates. Why don’t you post links to your sources?
PHD – you are absolutely right – they can use any name they like. I suspect that the major reason why they did that is that most of the content of these old games is just the stuff they used from the old C64 software. And even if you come to think about it – it’s not even that much work for a publisher to re-brand an old C64 game and put their logo on it, because this is actually much easier than putting out a new game. Just imagine the kind of effort that would go into creating a new game!
Although I do wonder if the user community actually agrees on whether to go with Open Source or Proton Basic?

What you are missing here is that it doesn’t matter who’s idea it was, Open Source is already out there. It was already developed and used by others.
I could imagine that many people would find the whole idea just silly, regardless of whether the people that developed it were serious or not. You know, it all looks like an ad on a flyer put on someone’s fridge by an entrepreneur.
I’m not the one saying that OS is an ad. It’s you. Open Source was not on my radar, until you brought it up.
Don’t know what you mean by “it all looks like an ad”. OS is a commercial product being developed by people who are paid by someone else. The people who develop Open Source are paid by no one.
And, again, I don’t think that people would find it so silly, because I don’t think that it is an idea that has not been tested in reality.
But, for sure, the only reason why I brought it up is that, by that, you seem to assume that it is only a game publisher who can freely brand an existing product.
And that’s not right. You can see this on one of the official sites of the
